How the ranking works: Golf Resorts

The review panel

While our Golf World Top 100 Courses ranking focuses solely on the quality of the golf course, our resorts ranking assesses a much wider range of criteria and so our review panel is more varied in its composition. It includes golf writers, golf course designers, tour operators, hoteliers, golf club operators and well-travelled readers. It goes without saying that the review criteria is significantly different, too, given that the quality of the golf course itself is just one of several factors to consider when choosing a golf break.

The assessment criteria

1. The Golf Course(s)
We assess both the quality and quantity of the holes, using our most recent Top 100 Courses ranking as the benchmark for our rating. Resorts with two or more courses are looked on favourably since they give golfers the opportunity to enjoy different experiences without leaving the property.
Points allocated: 40

2. The Resort Experience
Accommodation, dining quality and variety, service and the general ambience of the resort are the key factors taken into account. Given the importance of these three criteria, we now place more emphasis on the overall resort experience than we have done in the past.
Points allocated: 30

3. Location
In this ranking, we take ease of travel from international hubs into account, but place a greater emphasis on the attractiveness of the surroundings once you get there, as well as the proximity of engaging and entertaining local attractions.
Points allocated: 15

4. Practice Facilities
While many golfers are unlikely to make a decision to travel to a particular resort based purely on the quality of the practice facilities, coaching trips are growing in popularity. Similarly, a top-quality practice range, short game area and putting green can be a strong attraction.
Points allocated: 10

5. Additional Amenities
This is the area that separates a golf resort from a golf course with rooms. We assess a resort on the variety of non-golf amenities and additional activities.
Points allocated: 10
