The Belfry Golf Club
LOCATION: SUTTON COLDFIELD, MIDLANDS
DESIGNER: DAVE THOMAS, PETER ALLISS
The Belfry Golf Club in the midlands has hosted more Ryder Cup tournaments than any other venue in the world and is home to some of the best golf courses and practice facilities you'll find anywhere. As well as three award-winning golf courses, there is also an award winning 4-star hotel on site.
The stunning Brabazon, PGA National & Derby courses are all sculpted from acres of lush North Warwickshire countryside and have provoked some of the most dramatic moments in the history of the sport. A stellar renovation of the resort in 2014 has further enhanced its reputation, creating, in Golf World’s view, “a modern retreat bursting with facilities”.
The Brabazon Course and the PGA National Course provide the chance for guests to follow in the footsteps of golfing legends whereas the Derby Course offers a pleasant alternative to these two flagship courses.
The Brabazon Course
The Brabazon Course at The Belfry Golf Club is a must play golf course in the midlands. It is steeped in history and Ryder Cup memories and is the stuff of golfing dreams. However it can be a little too demanding and intimidating for less experienced golfers. The legendary layout asks so many questions, the biggest coming on the short signature par-4 10th tee as you contemplate whether to go for the green or lay up short.
Golf legend Tony Jacklin lead both the 1985 and 1989 European Ryder Cup teams to victory on the Brabazon course at The Belfry Golf Club.
PGA National Course
The Brabazon course at The Belfry Golf Club was always going to be a hard act to follow but The PGA National Golf Course has managed it. In fact, the PGA is considered by some to be the top Belfry layout. It provides a serious test but the big greens are a joy to putt on. It is also in fine shape year-round and having hosted two European Tour events, is fast becoming one of the top courses in the country.
The PGA National Course was the handiwork of Dave Thomas and was built in 2007. The Brabazon Course is the one everyone wants to play because of its Ryder Cup heritage but the PGA is a worthy contender and should most definitely not be overlooked.
With its inland links appearance, this midlands golf course presents a unique challenge due to its hard and fast running fairways, undulating greens, severe run-offs and its 70 strategically placed cavernous bunkers.
The Derby Course
Designed by Peter Alliss and Dave Thomas, The Derby is a parkland course with far reaching views across the beautiful North Warwickshire countryside. It contains strategically placed bunkers, water hazards and well-designed risk and reward holes.
It is perfect for players of all abilities as it offers a gentle challenge as well as demanding accuracy right from the 1st tee, good club selection, and intelligent course management.
The Belfry Hotel
The Belfry Hotel is a fantastic 4-star venue located just 10 minutes north of Birmingham Airport, 15 minutes from Birmingham International Station and 30 minutes from Birmingham city centre. It is set in 550 acres of beautiful Warwickshire countryside and boasts a wide range of rooms, restaurants, bars, event rooms, and a luxury spa and health club.
