Silloth-on-Solway Golf Club

What we say

Silloth on Solway isn’t easy to get to, but those willing to make the journey will find one of the best hidden golfing gems in England.

The writer Bernard Darwin once wrote “I never more violently fell in love with a course at first sight” about Silloth on Solway, and if you make it to the Cumbrian coast, you will see why he said that.

Davy Grant laid Silloth out in 1892 and Dr Alister MacKenzie and Willie Park Jnr have both added their nous to this natural links, which is brilliantly routed and incorporates memorable features – not least blind shots.

REVIEW: Eden Golf Club (Championship Course)

Add in fabulous natural springy-but-firm turf – less manicured than at some links and all the better for it – that cover the fairways that snake between the dunes and you have a wonderful experience.

There are pleasant views all around once you get out into the links and Silloth offers an uncommon mix of pleasure and challenge, with just the right amounts of each. It won’t beat you up but you know you have to play well to score well.

REVIEW: Barrow Golf Club

The par-5 13th is the pick, starting with a drive over swathes of heather and then an exacting second shot through a slender gully towards an elevated green on top of a ridge. Played into the prevailing wind, it is an epic hole.

The 9th is another favourite, a short hole to an ‘island’ green which falls off on the right side and has protection from sand everywhere you look.

GOLF WORLD TOP 100: Best Golf Courses & Resorts

Silloth is, needless to say, affected by the breeze but such is the genius of the design that it is always playable. Don’t let the journey to west Cumbrian put you off heading for one of England’s finest courses.

  • 4.5 out of 5 Just play it!

    By alistair johnson

I didn't know what to expect from this course before we got there, but boy was I impressed. The course is one of the best I've ever played. It was challenging yet fun. The wind was blowing quite a bit and I can imagine that if it was really blowing your score could be anything. This course tests all aspects of your game. It has a great variety of holes, and with the high sand dunes it can feel like it's just you and the course at time, with no one else around. The course was in great nick even in January. It's amazing value for money and I can't wait to go back.

  • 4.5 out of 5 What a test of your game!

    By Barry Clark

By far the toughest course in Britain when the wind blows, and a mighty stern test when it doesn't. Played her a good number of times now, and rarely hit the same iron into the same green twice. Worth the trip, even from the deepest south, or the farthest north. A true hidden gem!

  • 4 out of 5 1 of Cumbrias Best!

This is worth every penny. Silloth is 1 of the best courses in Cumbria if not the Best! If the wind is blowing this is a true test of golf. True open championship Quality.
