7 reasons to visit Trump Aberdeen
Make this the year you head to Aberdeen to play the best modern course in GB&I.
1 The spectacular views
We could probably just leave this here, given the main image . But what is definitely worth explaining is that this is not one of those courses where you have great views from one green, a tee and a third from on top of the dune next to the 4th hole. Fantastic views are almost omnipresent here. If you’re not looking at the sea, it means you’re probably playing between two ridges of enormous dunes that you teed off from (and where you lapped up the views). If you only take the camera out on one hole, make sure it’s from the very top tee on 18. With its huge elevation you’ll have a magnificent backdrop of the impending 18 bunkers plus infamously tall saltire, unspoilt, wild beach stretches for miles to both the north and south, magnificent North Sea and Aberdeen city beyond. Views don’t make a golf course, but you wouldn’t ever say they didn’t help you enjoy one just a little bit more. Expect to be exhilarated here, from start to finish.
2 The clever design
Trump International was always going to be spectacular so perhaps thrilling views, elevated tees, awesome driving holes, epic par 3s and intimidating bunkers were all to be expected. You get all that at Trump International, but with the vision of Dr Martin Hawtree, a quiet man trusted by the R&A, you also get nuanced strategy which requires creative shot-making. Hawtree has shaped an astonishingly good piece of land and created something truly special.
3 The tranquillity
OK, it’s in the north-east of Scotland, so it’s hardly Regent Street. But there is a city just 25 minutes away, with an airport, a busy university and world-famous industry off its coast. But playing at Trump International is an utterly serene experience. There are no roads cutting through the site and no residential development round the outside. This is pure links golf to be enjoyed without compromise. Oh, and the spaced-out tee times means you have the time to fully savour this world-class seaside course.
4 The area’s other jewels
Trump International might be the highlight of Aberdeenshire, but it is not close to being the only attraction... world-class links have sat on the coastline for over 100 years. Royal Aberdeen and Cruden Bay are also in any Top 100 ranking and Murcar, Peterhead, Newburgh and Fraserburgh offer fabulous support. With the additional benefit of St Andrews being less than two hours to the south, use Trump International as your base for the greatest golf break of your life...
5 The Scottish tipple
After 36 holes of exhilarating links golf, you’ll be ready for some sustenance. Be assured you will be well fed and watered in these parts. For those who enjoy a post-round tipple, Trump International houses over 50 varieties of Scotland’s most famous export Uisge Beatha (whisky - the water of life) – as well as locally-produced beers, gin and rum. Accompany your 19th hole pint with our personal clubhouse favourites – locally-sourced haggis bon bons and fish and chips straight from the North Sea.
6 The wildlife
Deer, dolphins, seals… even humpback whales were seen off the shores of the links last year. This is golf in the raw, where even the most timid and rarest wildlife can be spied from the fairways. Just don’t gaze too long out to sea looking for the dolphins or whales when you’re on the beachside 3rd green (pictured above left), which is surely one of the most scenic in Scotland.
7 The challenge
You might have heard Trump International is tough. Too tough. Well, it is no pushover. Pros and plus-handicappers go there and shoot over par – but that’s off the back tees. When you arrive at the 1st tee at Trump International you’ll be asked what you play off and advised which of the six tee options is best for you. You can lie about your ability, but you’ll have a battle, because it IS a proper championship course. Be honest though, and the multiple tee locations allow you to hit off tees relevant to your ability – which means you don’t always have to be hitting driver down dune-lined fairways. Be sensible and you WILL reap the rewards.
