8. Royal Lytham & St Annes
Location: st annes-on-sea, lancashire, england,
Designer: george lowe (1866)
The Golf World Top 100 GB&I and England rankings historically have been very kind to Lytham. While others have struggled to look beyond its somewhat workmanlike setting, we have been steadfast in our acclaim of its design purity and the stiff examination paper it presents. It’s hard to explain exactly why Lytham has tumbled a few places. One explanation is that it lacks a little of the visual excitement we have chosen to embrace with more gusto in this year’s ranking. In many ways, it is the antithesis to a spectacular links like Turnberry’s Ailsa. However, if aesthetics are not your thing, Lytham is as good as it gets. Its rippling fairways house some of the most penal bunkering found in the land.
